Abra : Darkwave Duchess Documentary

Yesterday was blood moon rising. (Surprise, surprise) Lately I've been feeling darker music; and Abra is none other than the Darkwave Duchess.

If you haven't heard of her or her music, she is a member of Atlanta's Awful Record's collective alongside Father, Lord Narf, Tommy Genesis, and KeithCharles Spacebar.

Abra is spooky, and her music could be described as dark lo-fi 80's pop. She's not hip-hop, but she's worth getting to know. And we really need to stop labeling every black female artist as either soul or R&B. She writes her own lyrics and she produces most of her shit. I love to listen to her when I'm within myself, and also because she's pretty hypnotic.

Check out this documentary she made with the FACTmagazine to learn more about how she started and how she grew up.

Abra is such a do-it-yourself artist and that's one of the qualities I love about her and her music. Today, we're hearing more and more artists having ghostwriters and bare artists not giving recognition to their own producers and the people behind their work. The Awful Record's are also amazing because they're carefree and make music that suits them, their personalities, and disregards the norms society pressures upon artists.

The only singer in a crew full of rappers, she considers herself the “big sister” of Awful, though it was the whole crew’s abandon and disregard for industry “norms” that inspired Abra’s own fearlessness. “They always remind me to stop apologizing for stuff you shouldn’t apologize for,” she explained.
